Our History
The Beginning
Modern Motorcars was founded in March 2006 by Don and Kim Hunsaker. What started as a bold idea in a modest garage quickly became a mission to raise the standard of pre-owned vehicles in Southwest Missouri. With just two employees and an eye for quality, the Hunsakers set out to build something different—something better. From day one, the goal was clear: deliver a buying experience that felt personal, trustworthy, and refined. Even in those early days, Modern stood out - defined by its attention to detail, curated inventory, and the belief that great vehicles deserve an equally great experience.
A New Home
By Fall 2012, Modern Motorcars had outgrown its original location. The team relocated to a purpose-built facility on Deffer Drive—setting the stage for a new chapter of growth and professional presentation. This move wasn't just about space. It was about delivering a showroom experience that matched the quality of the vehicles on the floor. Clean lines, open spaces, and thoughtful design elevated the experience for customers and the team alike.
Detailing Facility Opens
In Summer 2015, Modern added its first major service expansion: a dedicated detailing facility in Nixa. It was a natural next step for a company obsessed with condition, finish, and presentation. The detailing team quickly became known for their precision work—bringing vehicles to showroom condition and helping clients protect their investments with care and consistency.
Service Begins
One year later, Modern opened its in-house service facility, allowing them to provide the same level of excellence after the sale. Maintenance, repairs, diagnostics— it was all handled in-house, by a team that shared the Modern standard. Customers could now turn to a trusted name not just for buying, but for ongoing service—simplifying the ownership journey while reinforcing confidence at every turn.
Scaling Up
Modern Motorcars expanded once more—this time into high-end detailing. From deep interior refreshes to full exterior restorations, the detailing studio was built to serve those who don't just drive their cars—they care for them. With obsessive attention to every surface, detail, and stitch, Modern Motorcars Detailing quickly became known as a go-to for car enthusiasts, collectors, and everyday drivers alike.
Collision & Protection
2019 was a pivotal year for Modern. In the spring, we opened our in-house collision center in Nixa, bringing bodywork and restoration in-house for the first time. By winter, we added a full paint protection film (PPF) operation to preserve and protect vehicles with industry-leading care. These additions transformed Modern from a dealership into a full-scale automotive destination. Now, vehicles could be purchased, restored, and protected—all with one consistent level of quality.
Tesla Certified & Collision Expansion
In Spring 2021, Modern Collision became Tesla Certified—earning recognition as the only facility in Southwest Missouri to meet Tesla's rigorous repair standards. It was a proud milestone and a clear validation of the team's relentless pursuit of excellence. To meet growing demand and better serve clients, the facility expanded again—this time to 15,000 square feet. With more space, better equipment, and a Tesla badge on the wall, Modern raised the bar once again.
Unified Facility Launch
In Fall 2024, Modern merged its detailing, tinting, and PPF operations into a brand-new, 10,000 sq. ft. facility in Nixa. This unified approach created a seamless experience for customers and a world-class environment for the team. With everything under one roof, Modern could provide faster turnaround times, more consistent results, and a streamlined process built around precision, care, and client satisfaction.
The Team Today
Today, Modern Motorcars has grown to a team of 45 and continues to set the standard for automotive excellence in Southwest Missouri. From sales to service, collision to protection—every touchpoint reflects their unwavering commitment to quality. With a refined brand and a renewed focus, the mission is stronger than ever: Where quality drives everything.
